To build a resilient energy system, we must more than quadruple the current rate of electrification, moving from around 21% of final energy consumption today to 35% by 2035.

This might not sound like a big change, but because of the efficiency of using electricity, this will make giant strides to move away from fossil fuels in our energy system.

And the sooner we move, the faster we can enjoy the benefits of home-grown, affordable and secure renewable electricity.

DELIVERING OUR ELECTRIC FUTURE

Rising electrification will need to be backed by continuing and accelerated investment in renewable energy and energy storage capacity, as well as grid expansion and modernisation.

Renewable energy capacity will need to grow from just over 5 TW today to 18.4 TW by 2035. Energy storage capacity will need to increase six-fold from around 420GW to 2.5 TW.

And US $1.2 trillion will need to be invested in grids globally each year between 2026-2035.
